Manteena actively promotes health and wellbeing to its employees by arranging free health checks, offering annual flu shots, providing free fruit at work and organising social club events with a physical element such as ten pin bowling and paintball.
Traditionally many of us, particularly men, are reluctant to seek medical advice or treatment let alone visit a health professional just for a check up, however earlier this year OzHelp visited a number of Manteena building sites and its head office to conduct the Tradies Tune-Up.
Due to the spread of Manteena’s workforce across multiple construction sites throughout the ACT and Illawarra region, the take up rate for the annual health check was normally around 20%. A major benefit of the Tradies Tune-Up program is that OzHelp is equipped to visit various locations, rather than the business having to rely upon its workers to meet at a single pre-determined location, at a particular date and time.
45 Manteena staff participated in the program earlier this year which is a major increase on previous year’s health checks.
Physical tests were conducted for blood pressure and cholesterol plus a questionnaire about lifestyle choices, exercise and diet.
The Manteena health checks produced some interesting results–mainly relating to diet, exercise patterns and stress levels.
Importantly for some staff the testing uncovered conditions which, if left unchecked could have led to more serious complications in the future.
Manteena’s General Manager, Mark Bauer added, “Occupational Health & Safety is our number one priority on each of our building sites, and equally important is the general health & wellbeing of all our employees in their day-to-day lives.
“For a few of our staff, the health checks conducted by OzHelp during the Tradies Tune-up indentified some health issues that would have normally have gone unnoticed.
“These staff are now encouraged to seek further medical advice from their G.P. and be proactive in dealing with these health issues”.
The OzHelp Tradies Tune-Up program is a fantastic initiative for the construction industry and is totally supported by Manteena.
